Removable Braces – Early Treatment in the Mixed Dentition
As long as the jaw is growing, it can be guided. Expansion plates, activators, bionators and habit trainers create space, correct crossbite or overbite and shorten later treatment – worn in the evening and at night, taken out for eating and brushing.

What it is about
Removable braces – briefly explained
A removable appliance consists of an acrylic base with wire elements and usually an expansion screw. It sits at the palate or between the dental arches and gives the growing jaw a direction: the arch is widened, a crossbite resolved, the lower jaw guided forward or space created for permanent teeth. Your child wears it at home and overnight – at school and during sport it stays in its box.
The point of early treatment is not to place every tooth perfectly, but to correct the foundation while that is still easy. A short second phase with fixed braces or aligners for fine alignment often follows – usually much shorter than if the growth phase is left unused. Sometimes the first phase alone is enough.

What parents ask us
How long does the appliance have to be worn?
About 14–16 hours a day – so afternoons at home and overnight. The more reliably it is worn, the shorter the treatment.
Does it hurt?
No. After fitting and after each turn of the screw your child feels pressure for a day or two. Speaking feels unfamiliar at first and settles within a few days.
What happens if it is not worn?
Then nothing moves – or after a longer break it no longer fits properly. We see this at the check-up and talk about it openly with child and parents instead of simply carrying on.
How is the appliance cleaned?
Daily with a toothbrush and cold water, once a week with a cleaning tablet. Never put it in hot water, and always into its box when out of the mouth – most appliances are lost in a napkin at the lunch table.
