Fixed braces – briefly explained
In the multiband technique a bracket is bonded to every tooth; an archwire connects them and defines the target shape. Because the wire works continuously, it achieves movements that trays cannot reliably deliver: uprighting severely rotated teeth, paralleling roots, closing gaps completely, aligning displaced teeth. The force is light and constant – not strong and abrupt.
Fixed braces are the choice when the findings are demanding, or when wear discipline cannot be taken for granted: they work without anyone having to think about them. For adults who care about appearance there are tooth-coloured ceramic brackets. After the active phase a retainer – usually a thin wire behind the front teeth – secures the result.

What patients ask us
How long does multiband treatment take?
Usually 12–24 months, depending on the findings. After planning we give you a realistic range – and we say so if something changes along the way.
Do fixed braces hurt?
After bonding and after each archwire change the teeth are sensitive to pressure for two or three days. Soft food and a mild painkiller if needed are enough; wax protects the cheek in the first days.
What am I not allowed to eat?
Hard and sticky things loosen brackets: nutshells, baguette crust, caramel, chewing gum. Cut apples and carrots into pieces instead of biting into them – then little goes wrong.
Are ceramic brackets as good as metal ones?
They correct just as precisely, but are slightly larger and more fragile, and treatment sometimes takes a few weeks longer. We discuss the trade-off before we start.
