What it is about
Gum Grafting for Recessions – briefly explained
Gum recession is caused by brushing too hard, a thin tissue type, tooth misalignment, grinding or periodontitis. The exposed tooth necks are sensitive, prone to decay and aesthetically disruptive – teeth look «long».
During the graft, we take a small piece of connective tissue from the palate (or use a collagen matrix) and use it to cover the recession. PRF supports healing. The result: protected tooth necks, stable gums, a harmonious gumline – and a stop to further recession.

What patients ask us
Can receded gum tissue grow back on its own?
No – receded gum tissue does not grow back on its own. What you can influence is further recession: a gentle brushing technique with a soft brush, a splint if you grind your teeth, and treatment of periodontitis all stop it from progressing. Only a gum graft can rebuild lost tissue, using the body's own connective tissue to cover the exposed root again.
Does every case of gum recession need treatment?
Not every recession needs a graft. Treatment makes sense when the tooth necks are sensitive, the recession is progressing, the exposed root is at risk of decay, or the gum is too thin ahead of orthodontics or an implant. With a small, stable recession and no symptoms, it is often enough to address the cause and monitor how it develops.
Is taking the tissue from the palate painful?
The tissue is taken under local anaesthesia and is painless during the procedure. Afterwards the palate site is tender for a few days, similar to a burn from hot food.
