Gum Contouring – The Frame for Your Smile
Too much gum showing when you smile, uneven gum margins, teeth that look too short? A minimally invasive gum contouring procedure creates harmony – often half of the aesthetic result.

What it is about
Gum Contouring – briefly explained
The gumline is the frame of the teeth. If it is uneven or too low, teeth look short or irregular – even if they are perfect. With a gummy smile, a lot of gum tissue shows when smiling.
We correct the gumline minimally invasively (gingivectomy, crown lengthening). The correction is often the first step before veneers or crowns – or the only thing missing.
In detail

What patients ask us
What helps against a gummy smile?
A gummy smile – a lot of visible gum when you laugh – has different causes, and the treatment depends on them. Most often the gum covers too much of the tooth crown; a minimally invasive gum correction then lengthens the teeth optically and harmonises the contour, usually in one session. If the cause is a very mobile upper lip or the shape of the jaw, other measures are needed. That is why we begin with an analysis of the smile line, gum contour and bone level.
Does gum contouring hurt, and how long does healing take?
The procedure itself is painless because it is done under local anaesthesia. Afterwards most patients feel mild sensitivity for one to two days, which is easily managed with an ordinary painkiller. The gum heals within one to two weeks.
Does the gum grow back after the correction?
No – when the correction is planned correctly, the result stays permanently stable. What is decisive is the distance to the bone: gum needs about two millimetres of attachment on the bone, the so-called biological width. If only gum is removed although the bone sits too high, it grows back within months. That is why we check the bone level beforehand and correct it as well if needed – that is the difference between gingivectomy and crown lengthening.
What is the difference between gingivectomy and crown lengthening?
With a gingivectomy only excess gum is removed – that is enough when there is sufficient distance to the bone. With crown lengthening the bone margin is minimally adjusted as well, so that the gum stays permanently in its new position. It is also necessary when a tooth is deeply damaged and a crown needs a clean, healthy margin. Which variant fits is shown by the analysis of gum contour and bone level.
