Amalgam removal – briefly explained
Drilling out amalgam releases mercury vapour. That is why we work with a rubber dam, nasal oxygen supply, high-volume suction, air purification, protective covering and an amalgam separator. The filling is removed in large pieces rather than being pulverised.
Removal makes sense in cases of metal intolerance, unexplained chronic complaints, a wish to conceive, or simply the desire not to carry a source of mercury in the mouth. Since amalgam fillings have a limited lifespan anyway, switching to well-tolerated materials is often doubly worthwhile.

What patients ask us
How harmful is amalgam really?
Amalgam consists of around 50% mercury, which is continuously released in small amounts – while chewing, grinding your teeth and drinking hot beverages. How much this burdens an individual varies from person to person. The EU has largely banned the use of amalgam from 2025.
What symptoms can mercury exposure cause?
Possible signs include chronic fatigue, headaches, difficulty concentrating, a metallic taste, gum problems or unexplained chronic complaints. Whether amalgam is the cause is something we clarify together with your physician.
What happens if amalgam is removed without protection?
Unprotected drilling releases mercury vapour and the finest particles, which are then inhaled or swallowed – exposure can briefly be higher than from the filling itself. That is why we only remove amalgam under a complete protection protocol.
Does intact amalgam have to be removed as well?
Not necessarily – we advise you without pressure. Removal makes sense in cases of intolerance, unexplained chronic complaints, a wish to conceive, or when fillings need replacing due to age anyway.
Which material goes into the tooth after removal?
Exclusively metal-free, biocompatible materials: high-quality composites for smaller fillings, ceramic inlays or crowns for larger defects – long-lasting, tooth-coloured and free of mercury.
What does detoxification after amalgam removal mean?
Supporting the body in breaking down stored mercury – for example through micronutrients or binding agents. On request we accompany this in cooperation with holistic-minded physicians and therapists.
Should amalgam be removed before a pregnancy?
If you wish to conceive, removal can make sense, as mercury crosses the placenta – during pregnancy and breastfeeding, however, we advise against removal. It is best planned well in advance.
